Alfonso IX ruled León in persistent defiance of papal authority — excommunicated twice, in part for marrying within prohibited degrees of consanguinity — and his coinage reflects a reign defined by political friction rather than stability. The meaja was the smallest denomination in circulation, worth half a dinero, and these fractional pieces were struck in enormous quantities to meet the demands of a monetizing rural economy still largely transactional in kind.
The billon content at this fineness places it at the lower end of functional coinage, typical of Leonese fractional issues under Alfonso IX as silver supplies tightened during his long reign.
