Isma'il ibn Sharif ruled Morocco for nearly 55 years — one of the longest reigns in Moroccan history — and spent much of it in near-constant warfare, both consolidating control against rival claimants and expelling the English from Tangier and the Spanish from Larache and Mehdia. The mazuna was the small fractional workhorse of his monetary system, minted at Fez under the title Hazrat, a term denoting an imperial mint city of the highest rank.
Flan quality on Isma'il-era mazunas is notoriously inconsistent, a direct consequence of the reign's chronic military expenditures straining mint operations.
