Simon Henry ruled Lippe from 1666 until his death in 1697, a period when small copper fractions like this were struck largely to address chronic shortages of low-denomination coinage across the fragmented northwest German territories. The Mariengroschen itself was a regional accounting unit with deep roots in Lower Saxony and the surrounding areas, and fractional copper issues of this type circulated far outside their issuing county.
