Mehmed II's second reign began in 1451 after the brief, disastrous interlude of his father Murad II's forced return to the throne — a period that had exposed the young sultan's inexperience. The conquest of Constantinople in 1453 prompted an immediate reorganization of the Ottoman monetary system, and the Constantinople mint, operating from the conquered city, became a primary source of small copper coinage for everyday transactions in the newly renamed capital.
