Obverse description Centrally placed large kanji character 寳 (Hō, meaning 'treasure') rendered in bold relief, surrounded by a cluster of four smaller kanji characters 保 (Ho) arranged symmetrically in the field at the cardinal positions. The inscription is deeply struck into the irregular convex flan in a distinctive hammered style characteristic of Edo-period mameitagin coinage. The overall composition fills the field without a formal border, consistent with the bean-shaped planchet format. The surface exhibits the characteristic dark patina and textured field of circulated billon coinage of the Tenpō era.
