The Genroku Mameitagin was struck as part of a broad currency debasement ordered by the fifth shogun Tsunayoshi in 1695, driven by a chronic fiscal shortfall in the Tokugawa treasury. Silver content was slashed from roughly 80% in the preceding Keichō silver to just 64%, effectively allowing the government to profit by recalling and recoining the older, purer issues. The resulting public backlash was immediate — merchants quickly identified the inferior metal and prices adjusted accordingly, contributing to the inflationary pressures of the Genroku period.
The single Daikoku stamp distinguishes this piece within the Mameitagin series as an authenticating mark applied at the Kinza or Ginza minting offices.
