Malla - Sancho I

Sancho I of Majorca inherited a kingdom that existed largely by political fiction — a vassal state of Aragon, its independence dependent on careful diplomacy rather than military strength. His coinage reflects that precariousness: the malla, the smallest fractional denomination in the Mallorcan system, was a workhorse of local street commerce in Palma and the island markets, too humble to attract the attention that brought larger denominations under Aragonese monetary pressure.

Billon of this fineness degrades unpredictably in Mediterranean soil conditions, which accounts for the frequency of heavily corroded survivors.
