| Descrizione del dritto | Central field displays a large crowned Gothic monogram 'M' for Matthias, flanked by the date numerals split across the field (e.g. '16' to the left and '18' to the right of the monogram). Below the monogram, the denomination inscription 'MALEY GROSS' (Malý Groš, meaning Small Groschen) is rendered in two lines across the lower field. The coin is struck on a roughly round flan with a beaded inner border. The overall design is characteristic of early seventeenth-century Bohemian hammered coinage, with bold, deeply impressed lettering. |

Matthias II's reign over Bohemia was defined almost entirely by the mounting confessional crisis that would detonate into the Thirty Years' War months after his death. The Kuttenberg mint — Kutná Hora — had been the economic backbone of Bohemian silver coinage since the 14th century, its output underpinning the kingdom's financial credibility across Central Europe. By the time this groschen was struck, the mint's output was already strained by the political paralysis between Matthias and the Bohemian Estates.
The Defenestration of Prague occurred in May 1618, within the production window of this issue.
