Lithuania's October 1992 food coupons — "maisto talonai" — were a stopgap rationing instrument issued during the acute supply crisis that followed independence and the severing of Soviet distribution networks. They circulated alongside the litas transitional currency at a moment when basic goods were still being allocated rather than freely traded.
Spindulys, the Kaunas printing house with roots back to 1928, handled production domestically — an early exercise in sovereign printing capacity for a state that had only recently reclaimed its institutions.
