Lithuania's food coupons — "maisto talonai" — were a stopgap measure introduced as the country severed its economic ties with the Soviet ruble zone. The December 1992 series came near the end of this rationing system; the litas had not yet returned to full circulation, and the coupons functioned as parallel instruments to control access to subsidized staple goods during a period of acute shortages and hyperinflationary pressure on the interim talonas currency.

Printed by Spindulys in Kaunas, a press with roots in interwar Lithuanian publishing, these were produced domestically — a deliberate signal of administrative independence as much as a logistical necessity.
