Lithuania's food coupons — "maisto talonai" — were introduced as a rationing mechanism during the acute supply crisis that followed the Soviet breakup and the painful transition away from the ruble zone. The June 1992 issue falls in the months immediately before Lithuania reintroduced the litas in October of that year, a period when both currency and basic commodities were simultaneously unstable.
Printed domestically by Spindulys in Kaunas, a press with roots going back to the interwar republic, the series reflects how quickly Lithuania had to improvise its own financial and administrative infrastructure after independence.
