| Reverse description | The emperor Gratian stands facing, head turned to the left, raising with his extended right hand a kneeling female figure personifying the Roman Republic (Roma or a province), while his left hand holds a Victory statuette on a globe, the winged figure crowning Gratian with a laurel wreath. The composition reflects the imperial ideology of renewal and restoration, characteristic of late Roman propagandistic reverse types. The mint mark LVGP appears in the exergue, denoting the first officina of the Lugdunum mint. The reverse legend REPARATIO REIPVB encircles the scene. |
