Arcadius was elevated to co-emperor by his father Theodosius I in January 383, aged perhaps five or six — this issue dates to the earliest years of his nominal reign, when real power resided entirely with Theodosius. The Rome mint was producing heavily during this period, partly to assert western legitimacy as Theodosius consolidated authority following the usurpation of Magnus Maximus, who had forced Gratian's death that same year and controlled Gaul, Britain, and Hispania until his defeat in 388.
RIC IX 55C is a relatively common type within the series, though Rome mint bronzes of Arcadius are frequently encountered with surface corrosion that complicates attribution.
