Obverse description Central field bears a three-line Arabic inscription giving the ruler's name and title, reading 'Sultan / Muhammad / ibn Ali', arranged within a roughly rectangular panel. The inscription is executed in a crude, archaic hand characteristic of Harari hammered coinage. The surrounding border features a dotted or beaded circle, irregular in form due to the hand-struck flan. The overall style is typical of the small hammered brass issues of the Emirate of Harar.
