Abu Bakr II ruled Harar as an Ottoman vassal following the port city's incorporation into Egyptian-controlled territory under Muhammad Ali's expanding sphere. The mahallak — a fractional copper piece — circulated in a market town that sat at the convergence of highland Ethiopian trade routes and the Red Sea commerce networks, handling coffee, slaves, and cloth. Egyptian administrative pressure during this period pushed Harar's coinage toward nominal standardization, though local minting practice remained irregular.
The A#I1192 attribution places this squarely within the Islamic coin series, reflecting Harar's position as the only walled Islamic city in the Horn of Africa.
