Reverse description Central field bears a plain Latin cross with four pellets or annulets, one in each angle formed by the arms of the cross, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle and a rope or cable border. The surrounding legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES ('In this sign thou shalt conquer') runs along the periphery. In variety J4 52.01, a small point or pellet appears at each side of the cross. The design reflects the standard reverse type employed on Portuguese silver hammered coinage under João IV.
