Obverse description Central field displays the royal numeral IIII (for João IV) surmounted by a royal crown, with the denomination LXXX in Roman numerals below, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle and a rope or cable border. The legend surrounding the central device varies by die variety and includes fragments of the king's titulature in Latin. The overall design is characteristic of Portuguese hammered silver coinage of the mid-seventeenth century, with irregular flan edges typical of the period.
