João IV issued these pieces under exceptional pressure — his accession in 1640 followed the successful revolt against sixty years of Iberian Union, and the restored Portuguese crown needed functioning coinage fast. The Évora mint, one of several provincial houses pressed into service during the early Restoration period, struck this denomination alongside Lisbon and Porto to meet urgent demand. Provincial output from Évora tends to show less consistent die alignment and planchet preparation than Lisbon strikes of the same type — a product of workshop capacity rather than any systemic failing.
