Obverse description Central field displays the royal monogram 'IO III' (Joannes III) surmounted by a royal crown rendered in relief, all within a plain inner circle. Below the monogram appears the denomination mark 'LXXX', indicating 80 reais. The design is enclosed within a beaded border. The surrounding legend, partially visible around the circumference, identifies the issuing monarch and reads in Latin. The coin exhibits the characteristic irregular flan and uneven strike typical of Portuguese hammered silver coinage of the mid-sixteenth century.
