| Obverse description | Lion's head facing left in three-quarter view, rendered with vigorous archaic energy; the mane is depicted with bold radiating ridges and the mouth is slightly open revealing teeth. The partial ethnic legend ΛΕΟΝ appears in the left field in Greek characters. The flan is irregular and slightly spread, characteristic of Sicilian hammered coinage of the mid-fifth century BC. |
