Aanvullende informatie

Hieron II ruled Syracuse for over half a century after maneuvering brilliantly through the chaos following Pyrrhus's withdrawal from Sicily, first as military commander and then as king. His long alliance with Rome — formalized after a brief early conflict during the First Punic War — kept Syracuse prosperous and largely autonomous while Carthage dismantled much of the rest of the island. That stability is directly reflected in his coinage: issues of this type were struck consistently across decades, which accounts for the considerable die variation documented across the SNG Copenhagen series.

The city fell to Rome in 212 BC after a two-year siege, during which Archimedes was killed. Production of Hieronian bronze effectively ended there.
