Gela's mint fell silent permanently around 405 BC when the city was sacked and largely destroyed by Carthaginian forces under Himilco during the campaign that also annihilated Acragas and Selinus in rapid succession. Whether this litra belongs to a desperate final emission before the sack or to the reduced, recovering community that limped along afterward remains a point of scholarly contention — Jenkins's sequencing in this period is provisional at best. The "var" designation against P1#13 suggests a die pairing not fully catalogued in the primary corpus.
