| Obverse description | A scallop shell depicted in high relief at centre, its ribbed valves fanning outward from a pointed base, filling the field within a plain raised border. The naturalistically rendered shell is a recurring civic emblem of Tarentum, alluding to the colony's maritime identity and the abundance of the Tarentine Gulf. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, characteristic of the early hammered coinage of Magna Graecia. No legend or additional devices appear on this face. |
