Aanvullende informatie

Gela's final decades as an independent mint were shaped entirely by violence. The city endured repeated Carthaginian raids throughout the late fourth century before being razed and abandoned in 405 BC — then resettled, then threatened again. These litrai belong to the city's second period of occupation, struck after Timoleon's campaigns drove Carthaginian forces back and briefly stabilized Greek Sicily. The mint's output during this window was modest and episodic, which accounts for the relative scarcity of the type against better-documented Geloan issues from the fifth century.
