Morgantina's coinage in bronze begins almost exactly when Timoleon's military campaign reshaped central Sicily, driving out Campanian mercenaries and resettling the city with Corinthian colonists around 339 BC. The mint was active for only a narrow window before Agathocles of Syracuse absorbed the city into his expanding sphere of control, making the entire civic series brief and relatively finite in scope.

The weight of surviving specimens varies enough across the type to suggest chronological phases within the issue, a point debated in the CNS commentary. Most examples reached major collections through the same handful of Sicilian hoards documented in the early twentieth century.
