Reverse description Central device depicts a crowned lion rampant guardant, facing the viewer, rendered in bold relief and holding a sword in its right forepaw and a sceptre in its left, typifying the heraldic Lion Noble type of Scottish gold coinage. The lion is set within a beaded inner circle against a granular hammered field. The surrounding peripheral legend in Latin capitals, separated by pellets, reads POST · 5 · & · 100 · PROA` · INVICTA · MANE · HEC, referencing the 105 unconquered ancestors of the Scottish royal line. The overall composition closely follows the tradition of the earlier Scottish Lion Noble coinage, adapted for the fourth coinage of James VI.
