Obverse description A rampant lion facing left with head turned to the right occupies the central field, brandishing a raised sword in its right forepaw and bearing a shield in its left. The lion, rendered in high relief with fine detail in the mane and musculature, serves as the heraldic emblem of the insurgent Belgian provinces. The encircling Latin legend, punctuated by stops, reads DOMINI EST REGNVM, with the date 1790 and the stylized words LI BER TAS incorporated into the legend, alluding to the revolutionary ideal of liberty.
