The peripheral legend in uncial script reads ✠ · CVNRADVS ⸰ REX · (Conrad, King), invoking the name of the Holy Roman Emperor Conrad as imperial authority, a longstanding Genoese monetary convention maintained well after his reign. The design is characteristic of the simplified, bold relief work typical of late 13th-century Genoese hammered gold coinage. |
