Reverse description A large steam and sail vessel, identified as the SS Appam, depicted underway to the right amid stylized waves, framed by decorative scrollwork borders. Below the ship, a seagull is shown in flight. The inscription in the lower field references the capture of the English vessel Appam by the German raider Möwe in February 1916, with the silver fineness mark '990' in the exergue. The engraver's initials 'BM' appear at lower left.
