正面描述 Central field features the crowned royal cypher of Henry III of Navarre, consisting of an interlaced 'H' monogram surmounted by a royal crown. The device is rendered in low relief characteristic of hammered billon coinage of the period. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading the king's royal titles. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, typical of hand-struck issues of this era. The overall strike is moderately well-centered with some flatness at the periphery.

背面描述 The reverse displays an ornate cross pattée in the central field, with pellets or small circular ornaments disposed in the angles of the cross. A fleur-de-lis appears as a stop or ornament within the legend. The surrounding Latin inscription carries the personal motto of Henry III of Navarre. The strike is characteristically uneven, with portions of the legend weak or partially off-flan due to the hammered production technique. The surface shows a green-grey patina consistent with long-term burial or circulation wear.

附加信息

Henry III of Navarre — the future Henry IV of France — issued this small billon piece during the years he was simultaneously King of Navarre and the Protestant leader of the Huguenot cause, fighting what would become the War of the Three Henrys. Navarre's coinage during this window was administratively separate from the French royal mint system, struck at Pau under its own authority. The liard denomination itself was a workhorse of everyday exchange, and billon issues from politically contested reigns tend to survive in poor condition precisely because they circulated hard and long among populations that had little access to better money.
