Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse presents a purely typographic design with the denomination inscription arranged in four bold lines across the central field: LIARD. / DE. / BOVILLON. / 1681. Below the date, a heraldic device comprising two small castle towers flanking a central fleur-de-lis serves as a mint or ducal emblem. The legend is struck in large, well-spaced Roman capital letters with separating dots, conveying clarity and authority. A fine toothed border runs along the outer rim, completing the composition.

Aanvullende informatie

Godefroy Maurice de la Tour d'Auvergne ruled Bouillon as a sovereign prince while simultaneously serving as a marshal of France — a dual loyalty that defined the duchy's peculiar position as a nominally independent enclave surrounded by the Spanish Netherlands and France. The liard was struck at a moment when Bouillon's autonomy was increasingly theoretical; Louis XIV had occupied the duchy militarily in 1676 and would not relinquish control for years. These copper issues circulated locally but under conditions entirely dictated by Versailles.
