Obverse description Crowned shield bearing the arms of Franche-Comté — a lion rampant — centered within a beaded inner circle. The crowned escutcheon is rendered in the Gothic heraldic style typical of mid-sixteenth-century Burgundian coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the inner circle, reading clockwise around the coin's periphery. The overall design is characteristic of the hammered billon issues struck under Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in his capacity as Count of Burgundy.
