| Obverse description | Central device consisting of a large crowned royal cipher composed of the letter C (for Carolus) enclosing the numeral 9, surmounted by an open royal crown rendered in fine detail. The cipher occupies the majority of the field. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, interrupted by pellet stops, reading CAROLVS IX D G FR REX G. The overall design is characteristic of the hammered billon coinage of the Valois monarchy, with the irregular flan lending the piece its typical hand-struck appearance. |

| Reverse description | Central field occupied by a floriated cross pattee with fleur-de-lis terminals at each arm, a classic device of the French royal coinage of the period. The cross is boldly struck and fills the inner circle of the coin. A beaded inner circle separates the central device from the surrounding circular legend. The peripheral Latin inscription, punctuated by pellet stops, incorporates the date 1573 and reads SIT NOMEN DNI BENE, a pious invocation. The overall design reflects the standard reverse type for French billon liards of Charles IX. |
