| Aversbeschreibung | Central device composed of five heraldic escutcheons arranged in the form of a cross: at the top, a shield bearing horizontal bars (Hungary); at left, a shield divided per fess; at centre, a shield bearing a perron (the Liège civic emblem); at right, a shield bearing a lion rampant; and at the bottom, a shield bearing three roundels or bezants. The four digits of the date 1852 are placed in the four angles between the arms of the cross. A circular Latin legend runs along the entire periphery of the field, enclosed within a beaded border. |

Struck during the sede vacante following the death of Bishop Cornelius Richard van Bommel in June 1852, this piece was issued under the authority of the cathedral chapter — the body governing the diocese between episcopal appointments. The uniface format, leaving the reverse blank, is not a production shortcut but a deliberate convention associated with sede vacante coinage, signaling provisional authority rather than full episcopal power.
Van Bommel's successor, Théodore de Montpellier, was not confirmed until later that year, leaving the chapter in administrative control long enough to authorize this issue.
