Obverse description A bold cross pattée with flaring arms occupies the central field, contained within an inner reeded (beaded) circle. The cross is rendered in high relief with concave arm faces characteristic of late medieval Italian hammered coinage. Surrounding the inner circle, the outer legend in uncial Latin reads ASTENSIS, flanked by rosette or fleur ornaments, with a small cross patty at the top serving as the legend stop. The overall design is typical of the Genoese grosso tradition adopted by the northern Italian communes.
