Philip II — Philip the Bold — received Burgundy as an appanage from his father John II of France in 1363, and his coinage program was from the outset a deliberate assertion of ducal authority distinct from the French royal monetary system. The billon blanc series issued under his name drew on northern French and Flemish minting conventions, reflecting the dual character of a domain that straddled the French crown's orbit while increasingly looking toward the wealthy Low Countries Philip had acquired through his 1369 marriage to Margaret of Male.
The Dumas reference distinguishes two die varieties (13-3-1 and 13-3-2), suggesting meaningful production across multiple mint sessions over his four-decade reign.
