Ladislaus II Jagiellon came to the Polish throne through the Union of Krewo in 1385 — a dynastic arrangement that exchanged his conversion to Christianity and marriage to Queen Jadwiga for the Crown of Poland. The Lwów mint served as the primary striking facility for Ruthenian coinage after Poland consolidated control over Red Ruthenia, and the kwartnik ruski reflects that administrative reality: a coin intended specifically for the eastern territories where older Ruthenian monetary conventions still held sway.
The nearly five-decade reign attributed to this type makes precise dating of individual specimens impossible without die study.
