Obverse description The obverse depicts a central scene with a Native American figure in a canoe facing right, with tall-masted sailing ships in the background and additional figures at right, all in raised relief. The theme inscription "TELL ME A STORY" appears in large letters across the lower field, flanked by the year 1978. The design was produced by Blaine Kern Artists for the 1978 Mardi Gras season.

Reverse description The reverse features a finely detailed portrait bust of a Native American chief wearing a large feathered headdress, facing left in the central field, with the designer's initials 'OM' at lower left and the founding year 1946 incorporated within the headdress at right. The curved legend KREWE OF HOUMAS arcs along the upper border, and HOUMA, L.A. appears along the lower border.
