The Bishopric of Chur occupied an awkward political position in the early eighteenth century, nominally a prince-bishopric within the Holy Roman Empire yet geographically embedded within the Swiss Confederation's Graubünden canton, whose Protestant majority viewed episcopal authority with open suspicion. Bishop Ulrich VII von Mont issued this kreuzer during a period of ongoing tension between the cathedral chapter's imperial allegiances and the local Freestate leagues that effectively controlled civil administration in the region. Small billon issues like this one circulated primarily within the restricted ecclesiastical territories where the bishop's writ still held practical force.
