Chur's status as both an episcopal seat and a nominally autonomous city within the Graubünden canton produced a peculiar monetary situation — the city government and the bishop's administration each maintained separate minting rights well into the eighteenth century. These small billon pieces were struck under civic authority specifically to meet demand for the lowest denomination of daily exchange, a role the episcopal issues did not adequately fill. The series spans nearly two decades without significant design revision, suggesting continuous die use or close copying between successive emissions.
