This kopeck falls within the co-reign of Ivan V and Peter I, a constitutional peculiarity forced by the streltsy uprising of 1682, which placed the mentally incapacitated Ivan V on the throne alongside his half-brother Peter as co-tsar. The arrangement was effectively managed by their sister Sophia as regent until Peter engineered her removal in 1689. Coins struck under this dual authority circulated with either tsar's name — the distinction matters to collectors, as relative survival rates between Ivan-named and Peter-named pieces differ meaningfully. Ivan V died in 1696, ending the co-reign.
