During the co-tsardom of Ivan V and Peter I — imposed by the Miloslavsky faction following the Streltsy uprising of 1682 — coins were struck in both names, though Peter's faction gradually consolidated power after Ivan's death in 1696. This piece, bearing Peter's name, was produced using the wire-money technique inherited from medieval Muscovy: a silver wire blank hammered between dies, producing the characteristic irregular oval flan. The method had changed almost nothing since the 15th century.
