Obverse description A mounted horseman, depicted as the Tsar, riding a galloping horse to the right and brandishing a spear in the traditional Russian wire money (cheshuyка) style. The figure is rendered in a stylized, archaic manner characteristic of hammered coinage of the Muscovite period. Cyrillic mint mark letters appear beneath the hooves of the horse. The design is struck on an irregular planchet cut from a silver wire rod, resulting in a characteristic lentil-shaped flan with uneven margins.
