During the brief co-tsarship of Peter I and Ivan V — imposed after the Streltsy revolt of 1682 forced the regency of Sophia Alekseyevna — the mint produced wire money bearing the names of both rulers, an arrangement with no real precedent in Russian coinage. This particular piece names Ivan, the elder and nominally senior tsar, though effective power shifted decisively toward Peter following Sophia's deposition in 1689. The co-tsarship persisted on paper, and on coin, until Ivan's death in 1696.
