Kopeck - Peter I / Ivan V with the name of Ivan

Peter I and Ivan V ruled jointly following the Streltsy revolt of 1682, with their elder sister Sophia acting as regent. The arrangement was constitutionally awkward enough that the mint produced wire money — these hand-cut slivers of silver rod stamped with a die — in both names simultaneously. This piece carries Ivan's name despite Ivan being largely incapacitated and politically marginal throughout the co-reign; his inclusion was a dynastic formality insisted upon by the Miloslavsky faction that had engineered the revolt.

Ivan V died in 1696, after which Peter ruled alone and within a decade abolished wire coinage entirely in favor of Western-style milled coins.
