Peter I's wire kopecks — the so-called "chешуйки" or scale money — were an anachronism he actively despised. Struck by hammering silver wire into irregular planchets, the technique had not changed since the reign of Ivan the Terrible. By 1716 Peter was already phasing them out in favor of Western-style milled coinage, making late-date wire kopecks transitional survivors of a dying monetary technology he had campaigned against for nearly two decades.
Production ceased entirely in 1718.
