| Obverse description | Crude hammered depiction of a mounted horseman (the Tsar) facing right, shown in profile astride a horse, holding a lance or spear directed downward toward a serpent or fallen figure beneath the horse's hooves — a composition derived from the traditional image of St. George and the Dragon that served as the standard type for Russian wire kopecks. The figure wears a crown and robes rendered in low relief, characteristic of the schematic artistic style of early eighteenth-century Russian wire money. The design is struck on an irregular oval flan of flattened silver wire, with the image only partially centered due to the nature of the hammered technique. The Cyrillic date characters ЯΨI appear in the field, serving as the mint and year designation. |
