Obverse description A mounted horseman facing right, depicted at full gallop on a charging horse, traditionally interpreted as the effigy of the Tsar. The rider brandishes a downward-pointing spear in his right hand, a motif derived from the ancient St. George iconographic tradition. Cyrillic date numerals in Church Slavonic notation appear in the field beneath the horse's hooves, reading ҂АѰI (corresponding to the year 1710 in the Old Russian numeral system). The planchet is of characteristic wire-money form: small, irregular, and lens-shaped, struck from a flattened silver wire blank.
