Obverse description A mounted horseman, traditionally identified as the Tsar, depicted in profile galloping to the right while brandishing a spear; the figure is rendered in the characteristic schematic style of Russian wire money. Cyrillic date numerals appear beneath the horse's hooves, recording the year in the Old Church Slavonic alphabetic numeral system. The flan is irregular in shape, as typical of chekanka (wire-cut) coinage of the period, with design elements occasionally struck off-center.
