Obverse description Obverse depicts a mounted warrior (the traditional image of a horseman, conventionally identified with St. George or the Tsar) shown in profile facing right, seated on horseback and brandishing a lance or spear downward toward a serpent or foe beneath the horse's hooves. The design is rendered in the characteristic schematic style of Russian wire money, with bold but somewhat crude relief typical of hand-hammered coin production. The flan is oval and irregular in outline, a direct result of the wire-cutting and hammering technique. The field is plain with no border or legend on this face. The overall strike shows the typical distortion and off-center characteristics inherent to chekha (scale) coinage of the period.
